A company that converts agricultural waste into renewable energy is looking at a site in Trion at the town’s industrial park.  A meeting was held yesterday evening to discuss plans for the new facility that would be built at the back part of the industrial park.

Trion Mayor Lanny Thomas told WZQZ News on Tuesday that the company is a renewable energy company that mases renewable natural gas from farm animal waste.  The company says that they would be using poultry waste to generate the gas at the facility.  Mayor Thomas says that if this happens, it will be the first of its kind in the United States.  Currently, there are renewable natural gas plants in the United States, but they are in areas with high concentrations of dairy farms and use cow manure.

Chattooga County ranks in the top fifty poultry producing counties in the state with a poultry farm gate value topping $25 million which is attractive to the new industry looking to locate in the area.  Nearby Gordon County has consistently ranked in the top ten poultry producing counties in the state.

Mayor Thomas says that he realizes one of the top concerns of area residents would be the possibility of offensive odors from the facility.  The mayor says that will not be the case as the new industry would utilize the latest odor control technology and smell won’t be an issue.
