Cherokee County, Alabama Sheriff Jeff Shaver confirmed the death of a three-year-old child who drowned in Weiss Lake over the past weekend.

On Saturday night, Sheriff Shaver issued the following statement:  Deputies, along with Leesburg Police and Fire, Cherokee County EMA, Cherokee County Rescue Squad, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Marine Division and Atrium Floyd EMS responded, this evening, to a residence in the Hopewell Community to search for a missing 3 year-old child.
The child was located in the Lake by public safety personnel. EMS attempted to save the unresponsive child, but tragically, the child died at Cherokee Medical Center.
