Lawmakers and civil rights leaders are questioning the decision to drop an African American social studies class from school curriculums across the state.  A group of Georgia legislators and civil rights leaders gathered at the Gold Dome in Atlanta on Wednesday to call for the class to be reinstated.

The decision by the state’s education superintendent to drop an advanced placement African American studies class from Georgia’s curriculum for the upcoming school year has sparked a firestorm of criticism from civil rights leaders, lawmakers, educators and students.

Calls are coming for State School Superintendent Richard Woods to overturn that decision.

It’s not just civil rights leaders and Democratic lawmakers who are questioning the decision to drop the AP class from Georgia High Schools. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported yesterday that Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has sent a letter to Supt. Woods, questioning the decision.
