Rome City Schools Superintendent Eric Holland said the students and staff members who were taken to the hospital after a wreck in Polk County on Thursday night were treated and released from the hospital as of Friday morning. Two adults and four students were transported to the hospital on Thursday night, according to the Georgia State Patrol.  A Rome man has been charged with DUI in connection with the accident that caused a school bus with athletes on board to overturn.

The players were on their way back to Rome on Georiga 101 near Doc Moates Road and Old Rome Road around 10:40 PM after competing in a scrimmage at Rockmart High School when the wreck occurred.

An investigation determined that a Nissan Versa was traveling south negotiating a slight curve and traveled into the northbound lane striking the bus near the rear driver’s side tire, according to the Georgia State Patrol preliminary report released Friday morning.

The Nissan spun off the road and, according to Ryanna Morgan who was following the bus, the driver of the school bus appeared to try and get control of the vehicle which then rolled multiple times and struck a utility pole on the west side of the highway.

The driver of the Nissan, Jeyonna Jariah Underwood, 21, of Rome, was arrested after the wreck and is charged with DUI, failure to maintain a lane and endangering a child under the age of 14.
