A Summerville man fell victim to a social security scam recently.  The complainant came to the Summerville Police Department last week and said that he wanted to report that he had been the victim of a scam regarding his social security.  He told an officer that someone he believed to be with the Social Security Administration (SSA), called and told him that he was owed back money and convinced him to give them his personal information.

The complainant noticed that $700 was withdrawn from his bank account shortly after the incident.  He notified his bank and said that he would also be notifying the Social Security office in Rome.

If you receive an email, text or phone call from someone claiming to be from Social Security asking for personal information, don’t respond. Instead, contact your local Social Security office or call 1-800-772-1213 to verify if they need the information. The SSA will never ask for your Social Security number, date of birth, or other private information via email. They also won’t ask for gift card numbers over the phone, or ask you to wire or mail cash.
