The annual burn ban in the state of Georgia will expire at midnight tonight, marking the end of the restricted period that runs from May 1st through the end of this month. This seasonal prohibition on open burning applies to a total of 54 counties across the state, including Chattooga County and the surrounding areas.

During this time frame, residents are prohibited from burning any yard waste or land-clearing debris, as the smoke and particulate matter from such fires can contribute to dangerous levels of air pollution and ozone. This temporary restriction is put in place each year to help improve air quality and protect the health of Georgia’s residents, as elevated ozone and particle pollution can be particularly toxic and detrimental, especially for vulnerable populations.

It’s important to note that Georgia also maintains a year-round prohibition on burning household garbage, which is never allowed under any circumstances.

With the upcoming expiration of the 2024 burn ban, Georgians will soon have more flexibility in their outdoor burning activities, but must remain mindful of air quality concerns and follow all applicable laws and regulations.
