A national recall of meat and poultry has been expanded to include close to 12 million pounds of products that may have been contaminated with listeria. The recall, initially for nearly 10 million pounds, was issued by BrucePac and affects products distributed to schools as well.

Some of the affected products were sold at popular stores such as Costco, Trader Joe’s, Target, Walmart, and Kroger. The recall includes prepared salads, burritos, and other foods produced between May 31 and Oct. 8. No illnesses have been confirmed in connection with the recall, but listeria can cause serious symptoms and complications, especially in pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. The recall was prompted by routine testing which found listeria in finished poultry products from BrucePac. The recall follows a previous incident involving Boar’s Head deli meats contaminated with listeria, which resulted in deaths and hospitalizations.

Listeria can cause serious illness, with symptoms including fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and potentially more severe issues like seizures and pregnancy complications. The CDC recommends high-risk individuals avoid deli meats or ensure they are heated to a safe temperature before consumption.
