Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger wants Congress to focus on election reform in the upcoming Republican-controlled government. He praised Georgia’s election administrators and highlighted the state’s transparent and secure elections with record turnout.

Raffensperger wants Congress to adopt measures to ensure transparency, security, and integrity in elections, following Georgia’s example. Key proposals for election reform include verifying citizenship, requiring photo ID for voting, banning ballot harvesting, quick and accurate reporting of results, and cleaning voter lists. Raffensperger believes these measures would strengthen public trust and ensure free and fair elections. He urges lawmakers to act now to maintain public confidence and protect the democratic process in future elections.

Raffensperger is not without his critics on the right and the left.  Rightwing Republicans still hold him responsible for Trump losing Georgia in 2020, even though there was no credible evidence of voter fraud ever proven.  Voting rights advocates say Georgia has made it easier for people to attempt to kick their neighbors off the voting rolls through voter challenges. They say Georgia already made voter challenges far too easy and that voters in the state face increased risk of losing their right to vote or being forced to defend it at public hearings.  They add that 2020 election deniers have wide latitude to spread disinformation and waste election official time with challenges are fueled by false claims about the 2020 election being “stolen,” including allegations that ineligible people voted, even though all evidence shows there was no widespread fraud in that election.
