In a display of grit and determination, the Trion Bulldogs faced off against a formidable Telfair County team that had been averaging over 30 points per game. However, in Friday night’s GHSA Class A Division II second-round playoff game, the Bulldogs’ defense rose to the occasion, leading to a hard-fought 17-6 victory that secures them a spot in next week’s state quarterfinals against Irwin County.

The victory marks a significant milestone for Trion, as it is the first time since 2003 that the Bulldogs have won two postseason games in a single season. The triumph also sets the stage for a home game against Irwin County, who triumphed over Early County with a score of 28-20. Both teams, having finished third in their respective regions, will face off in a match determined by a coin flip, granting the Bulldogs home-field advantage.

Trion’s defense showcased its strength by keeping Telfair scoreless until late in the game, an impressive feat against a team that had proven to be offensive powerhouses. “This has been a hurdle for us, and to overcome that and to be able to host on Black Friday this coming week is just awesome,” stated Trion coach Sean Patrick. He praised his team’s ability to adapt, noting the contrasting styles of their recent games—a high-scoring shootout last week and a defensive battle this week.

The Bulldogs struck first, receiving the opening kickoff and executing a 17-play drive that consumed over 10 minutes of the clock, culminating in a touchdown from quarterback Logan Stokes. Trion’s defense continued to hold strong, thwarting Telfair’s efforts to score during a lengthy drive that reached the Bulldogs’ 25-yard line but fell short on a fourth-down attempt. As the game progressed, Trion extended its lead to 10-0 with a field goal from Andy Ramirez just before halftime. The third quarter saw both teams struggle to find the end zone, with Trion forcing two turnovers on downs, showcasing their defensive prowess. In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs seized the momentum with another touchdown from Stokes, sealing the victory at 17-6.

Coach Patrick reflected on the hard work and dedication of his players and coaching staff, emphasizing the significance of this win for the seniors. “These seniors won their 40th game tonight, which is such a huge achievement. I can promise you that Trion will be rocking next week, and these kids deserve it”.
