Some 1,421 farmers and agribusiness leaders from Georgia gathered on Jekyll Island from December 8-10 for the 87th annual Georgia Farm Bureau Convention. The three-day event included a trade show, awards presentations, and educational sessions on policy and production issues affecting the state’s major commodities.

During the general session on December 9, attendees heard from Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper, and American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall. GFB President Tom McCall gave his annual speech, discussing the ongoing recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene and updates on the Weathered But Strong Hurricane Helene Relief Fund.

The convention’s theme, “Where You Belong,” highlighted the organization’s welcoming nature and marked the 60th annual meeting held on Jekyll Island. McCall focused on the impact of Hurricane Helene and reiterated GFB’s commitment to leadership development and membership growth. He recognized the efforts of GFB volunteers assisting with storm recovery.

Governor Kemp spoke about the severe impact of Hurricane Helene on Georgia’s agriculture, urging Congress to provide disaster relief funding amounting to an estimated $5. 5 billion in damage. To support farmers, the Georgia State Financing and Investment Commission approved reallocating $75 million for disaster relief loans, allowing eligible farmers to apply for up to $500,000.

Commissioner Harper talked about the challenges farmers faced before the hurricane hit and stressed the emotional toll on the farming community. He noted the significance of reaching out for support during difficult times.

Harvey urged farmers affected by Hurricane Helene to apply for relief funds; applications are due by midnight on December 31. The GFB seeks to raise $1. 5 million to assist farmers impacted by the storm. Duvall emphasized the need for a new farm bill and a fair guest worker program to address labor shortages in agriculture. He acknowledged the essential role of county Farm Bureau presidents in the organization’s success.
