Last week, Cherokee County, Alabama Sheriff Jeff Shaver announced the launch of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office unmanned aerial system (UAS) Aviation Unit, a drone program aimed at improving public safety and emergency response.

The drones can be quickly deployed for search and rescue missions, finding missing children, tracking suspects, mapping crime scenes, and assisting in emergency management.

Sheriff Shaver noted that before the UAS Unit, aerial support options were limited and slow. The new unit offers faster and more cost-effective solutions. The drones come with advanced cameras, thermal imaging, and powerful spotlights for night operations.

The unit is led by Sgt. Thomas Key, who is FAA certified. Chief Deputy Josh Summerford emphasized the unit’s role in using technology to serve and protect the community.
