During November’s General Election, more than 60% of Georgia voters approved House Bill 581, which provides property tax relief for homeowners. This law, known as the Save Our Homes Act, limits property tax increases on homes to the rate of inflation and will take effect on Jan. 1, unless local governments or school districts opt out.

Many school districts across the state have already opted out saying that opting out allows local school boards to control local tax policies, allowing for tailored tax rates to meet community needs and maintain tax revenue without limits.

The Chattooga Board of Education is holding a meeting this morning at 7 AM to discuss the ramifications of HB 581 on Chattooga County schools.  WZQZ News will have more information on this morning’s meeting as information becomes available.
