The announcement was made shortly before 4 AM today, signaling the approach of a major winter storm that could impact local communities.

Beginning Friday morning, light precipitation is expected to move in from west to east as a surface low develops along the northern coastline of the Gulf of Mexico. Meteorologists report increased confidence in a more southerly storm track, which heightens potential impacts across north Georgia throughout the day and into the night. Forecasts indicate that areas in far north Georgia, particularly the mountains, are likely to experience a snow event, with temperatures remaining below freezing in the atmosphere. Snowfall amounts are anticipated to reach several inches, with probabilities of accumulation exceeding 4 inches rising to between 50-70% in northern counties. The region can expect heavy, wet snow typical of southern snowfall events, with ratios around 7:1. There is also a concern for snow totals to exceed 6 inches in localized areas just north of the transitioning weather zone. Further south, along the I-20 corridor—encompassing much of the Atlanta metro area—forecasters predict a mix of precipitation types.

Precipitation is slated to taper off from west to east by Saturday morning; however, travel impacts are expected to persist throughout the day. With temperatures forecast to remain near or below freezing, areas with significant snowpack may experience hazardous conditions, while even locations where melting occurs could see rapid refreezing as temperatures are expected to dip into the teens Saturday night.
