Chattooga County Commissioner Andy Allen has released the latest audit report in a move meant to improve the financial practices of the county government. The 2023 financial audit shows that several changes are needed in record-keeping to enhance accuracy and accountability in financial operations.
The report, FS23-01, offers specific recommendations for the county’s court system, including adopting a general ledger function for consistent accounting, which is vital to avoid errors and ensure timely fund distribution. It also calls for regular financial reporting to strengthen internal controls.
Further findings in FS23-02 stress the importance of clear separation of duties in financial processes, urging better authorization, record-keeping, and reconciliation to build robust internal controls. FS23-03 points out the need for better accounting procedures in the Water Department, recommending ongoing employee training and monthly account reviews to maintain accuracy.
Lastly, FS23-04 highlights the importance of properly tracking internal transactions, emphasizing accurate bank reconciliations and strong oversight of interfund activities.
Commissioner Allen says that he is committed to addressing these issues to improve Chattooga County’s financial management, aiming for greater transparency and public trust.
