This week, contractors working for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) commenced a significant repaving project covering approximately 11 miles of U.S. 27 and a portion of Hwy. 48. The initiative, divided into two federally funded phases totaling just over $7 million, aims to enhance safety and improve road conditions for local residents and travelers alike.

The first phase of the project, awarded to Northwest Georgia Paving Inc. based in Calhoun, encompasses about 6.5 miles stretching from Summerville through Pennville to the Chattooga River in Trion. Valued at over $4.2 million, this phase focuses on milling and resurfacing the roadway to provide better driving conditions for all users. The second phase, entrusted to C.W. Matthews Contracting Inc. from Marietta, will cover a 4.3-mile stretch from the community of Gore to the city of Summerville. This $2.9 million effort involves milling down the current pavement, resurfacing the road, and rehabilitating the shoulders along the winding route that runs just north of Gore Subligna Road, through Taylor’s Ridge, and to the Chattooga River east of Summerville.

GDOT has set a clear deadline for both phases, with expectations for crews to complete the work by the end of August 2025. The resurfacing project is deemed crucial for maintaining the integrity of U.S. 27, ensuring not only smoother travel but also fostering safer conditions for the community.
