Northwest Georgia residents are advised to exercise caution this morning as black ice is a possibility on local roadways. A Cold Weather Advisory is currently in effect until 10 AM today due to dangerously low wind chill values, which are expected to dip into the single digits. Forecasters are warning that the threat of hazardous wind chills will continue, prompting the issuance of an additional Cold Weather Advisory from 10 PM tonight through 10 AM Friday.
The combination of cold temperatures and wind can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure. As such, individuals are urged to take precautions during this cold snap to protect themselves and their pets. The forecast indicates that the region will experience a prolonged period of cold weather, lasting approximately 48 hours. For those in need of warmth, a warming station has been established at the facility just past the Chattooga 911 EMA headquarters on Farrar Drive in Summerville. The shelter will remain open through Friday morning, welcoming guests from 5 PM to 10 PM. After 10 PM, individuals leaving the station will not be permitted to re-enter unless accompanied by a police officer. Those requiring assistance after hours can call 911 for transportation to the warming shelter. Today’s weather will be mostly cloudy, gradually transitioning to sunny skies, with a high near 33 degrees. A north wind of 10 to 15 mph is expected, with gusts reaching up to 25 mph. Tonight, temperatures will drop to around 15 degrees under mostly clear conditions, with winds remaining around 10 mph.
Looking ahead, Friday will bring sunny skies with a high of 43 degrees, followed by a partly cloudy night with lows around 22 degrees. The weekend forecast shows a warming trend, with Saturday reaching a high near 51 degrees and lows around 24 degrees Saturday night.
