Near record high temperatures are expected again today as a frontal boundary moves into the state on Sunday morning, bringing showers and thunderstorms. This morning, the satellite shows mostly clear skies with some mid to high-level clouds. A large Bermuda ridge off the Georgia and Carolina coast is keeping Georgia in a moist southerly flow, which is contributing to the warm air mass. High temperatures today are likely to reach the mid-80s to near 90, with upper 70s in the northeastern Georgia mountains.

The ridge will remain mostly in place today but will weaken as the frontal boundary approaches. This ridge has been preventing a vigorous frontal system, which caused severe weather from Texas to Ohio, from affecting Georgia. The ridge is expected to move east today, allowing the frontal boundary to enter northwest Georgia around daybreak on Sunday. The front will move slowly southeast through the state and is expected to be positioned between Atlanta and Macon by Monday morning. With temperatures on Sunday expected to be in the mid to upper 80s and dewpoints in the mid-60s, conditions are ripe for convective activity. The main threat will be damaging winds, with a slight risk of an isolated tornado. The Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk of severe weather for portions of north and west Georgia and a marginal risk for the rest of the area for Sunday.

From Sunday night through Friday, the front will position itself in far north Georgia with widespread showers and thunderstorms. The front will move south of Interstate 85 after midnight into central Georgia by sunrise on Monday. There is potential for several strong to severe storms, capable of damaging winds and possibly brief tornadoes. Rainfall totals will range from 1. 5 to 3 inches, with a slight risk of flash flooding. The cold front will clear by late Monday afternoon, leading to a cooler air mass that will persist through much of the week. Low temperatures could drop to near freezing in far northern Georgia, and a frost advisory may be needed. High temperatures will mainly be in the 60s until they begin to moderate on Thursday into next weekend.
