A recent report shows a serious literacy issue in Chattooga County, Georgia, with 75% of adults reading at or below an 8th-grade level. This information, shared by the Appalachian Learning Initiative (APPLI), indicates that Chattooga County has the third-lowest adult literacy rate among Georgia’s Appalachian counties.

Although 74. 2% of residents aged 25 and older have a high school diploma or higher, and 10. 7% hold a bachelor’s degree or beyond, many still struggle with basic reading skills. Math skills are also lacking, as 35. 4% of adults have trouble with multi-step math problems, while 37. 9% find problems with more than three steps difficult. Only 26. 7% of adults are good at math above the 8th-grade level. These alarming statistics highlight the need for more resources and targeted efforts to improve adult literacy and numeracy in the area.
