Starting May 7th, 2025, boarding a domestic flight in the U.S. will require a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification. This change, stemming from the REAL ID Act of 2005, aims to enhance security and reduce identity fraud.

While Georgia began issuing REAL ID-compliant licenses in 2012, AAA spokeswoman Montrae Waiters is urging residents to double-check their identification. “This may not be a widespread issue for Georgians,” Waiters explained, “However, if you recently moved to Georgia from another state or haven’t renewed your license in a while, you should take a close look at your identification cards.” A REAL ID-compliant card is easily identifiable by a gold or black star located in the upper right corner. If your Georgia driver’s license or ID lacks this star, it will not be accepted as proof of identity for domestic air travel after the May 7th deadline. The REAL ID Act was enacted by Congress in 2005 to combat terrorism and reduce identity fraud by setting minimum-security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and ID cards. To obtain a REAL ID for the first time, residents must visit a state-approved office in person.

Due to anticipated increased demand as the deadline approaches, Waiters recommends scheduling an appointment with the Department of Driver Services (DDS) as soon as possible. “The closer we get to the REAL ID deadline, the longer DDS lines are likely to be,” she cautioned.
