While often overshadowed by other regions, Northwest Georgia, particularly the Appalachian Plateau, remains a vital contributor to Georgia’s thriving poultry and cattle industries. The region plays a significant role in the state’s overall agricultural output, contributing millions to the local economy. North Georgia is widely recognized as the “Poultry Capital of the World,” and the Appalachian Plateau is a key player in this distinction.
The region boasts a strong presence in both broiler (meat chicken) and egg production, contributing significantly to the state’s poultry supply. Beyond poultry, the Appalachian Plateau is also making a name for itself in beef production. Local farms are increasingly focused on raising grass-fed and grass-finished cattle, catering to the growing demand for naturally raised beef. These farms often sell directly to consumers and local markets, ensuring fresh, high-quality products.
According to the latest data from the USDA, Chattooga County alone is home to 275 income-producing farms, encompassing over 58,000 acres of farmland. This agricultural activity generates over $96 million in revenue for the county, highlighting the economic importance of agriculture in the region.
While the Appalachian Plateau may not be the most well-known agricultural hub in Georgia, its consistent contribution to poultry and cattle production makes it a crucial piece of the state’s agricultural landscape. With a growing focus on sustainable farming practices and locally sourced products, the region is poised to continue playing a vital role in Georgia’s agricultural future.
