As summer nears, the American Red Cross is encouraging families to prioritize water safety by becoming “water smart. ” Many families will visit pools, lakes, and parks, so the Red Cross stresses the need for formal swim lessons and water safety education, particularly for children. Studies indicate that swim lessons can lower the drowning risk by 88% for kids aged 1 to 4.

“Before enjoying time at the pool or beach, it’s important for families to learn key water safety skills,” said Spencer Stelljes, Sales Director for Red Cross Training Services. Knowing these basic practices improves safety and enjoyment.

Each year, over 2. 5 million people learn to swim through Red Cross programs that are based on the latest research and best practices, helping to decrease accidental drownings by nearly 90% in the past century.

Key water safety tips include: never swim alone, designate a responsible adult to supervise, ensure proper life jacket use, and remember to “Reach or Throw, Don’t Go! ” to assist someone in trouble. Families should learn safe water habits and first aid. As summer approaches, the Red Cross urges families to act now and become “water smart” for a safe season around water.
