A devastating house fire on Oak Hill Road in Lyerly late last week saw Chattooga County first responders hailed as heroes after they pulled a man from a burning structure. According to Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader, the victim, identified as Jeff Floyd, was trapped inside the burning home. Sheriff Schrader praised the bravery and determination of the first responders, particularly highlighting the efforts of a small group who repeatedly entered the dangerous structure to rescue Floyd.

“There were a couple of firemen and a Sheriff’s Office Investigator that hammered down hard and went in the structure to save this person,” Schrader stated. “Don’t get me wrong, there were many firefighters and law enforcement there doing a GREAT job, but to these three or four that relentlessly went in and grabbed him and did not stop working to get him out, coming out for a breath and then going back in…my hats off to you!!” While acknowledging the contributions of all involved, Schrader specifically recognized the actions of Matthew Willingham, Daniel Sanford, Chuck Cox, and Kevin Woods, as well as two other unnamed first responders. “Y’all did it today!!! Thank you for what you do!!” he exclaimed. “We hear negative talk about public service employees from time to time, but today watching, being hands on with these guys and seeing the determination on their faces…I am PROUD to live and work in Chattooga County and consider it an honor to work alongside these folks!!” Schrader added.

Floyd was initially unresponsive when first responders arrived but was revived and transported to Wellstar/Cobb Burn Unit in ICU. He is now alert and talking, and is expected to remain in the ICU for several days. Floyd’s family expressed immense gratitude for the first responders’ efforts and the outpouring of support from the community. “We have the best people that give their heart and soul to this county! These men and women go above and beyond for Chattooga County! Thank you to all the First responders, Firefighters and Paramedics! We are blessed to have you!!” they stated.

While the family lost nearly everything in the fire, they are grateful that everyone survived.
