After a concerning E. coli warning last week, the Chattooga River is looking much cleaner, according to the latest “Swim Guide” released by the Coosa River Basin Initiative (CRBI). Test sites on the Chattooga River, including popular swimming spots near Lyerly and Chattoogaville, received significantly better grades this past Friday.

The positive news comes just in time for the highly anticipated 4th Annual Chattooga River Fest, scheduled for this Saturday, June 14th, in Lyerly. “Please get the Swim Guide to see current reports. Lyerly and Chattoogaville passed this week,” said Cindy Rivers-McGraw of the Chattooga River Group. “The high levels earlier were likely due to the heavy rains we had in May.”

The CRBI’s weekly “Swim Guide” provides vital information on water quality at popular swimming and recreation areas within the Coosa River Basin, including the Chattooga River. The guide alerts the public to potential health risks, such as elevated levels of E. coli bacteria, which can indicate fecal contamination and pose a risk of illness.

“The 4th Annual Chattooga River Fest is a go as of this day,” Rivers-McGraw confirmed. “We will continue to monitor the Swim Guide leading up to next week’s Fun Paddle on the Chattooga River.” Festival attendees and river enthusiasts are encouraged to consult the CRBI “Swim Guide” for the most up-to-date water quality reports before taking a dip or participating in river activities. The guide is a valuable tool for ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience on the Chattooga River.
