An accident on Monday morning at the intersection of Commerce Street and West Washington Street was caused by a vehicle running a red light, according to a report released on Tuesday by the Summerville Police Department.

According to the report, a 2022 GMC Terrain, driven by 73-year-old Sheila Fulton of Summerville, was traveling west on Washington Street across the intersection when her vehicle was struck in the passenger side by a 2024 Honda Civic, driven by 50-year-old Keri Roberts, also of Summerville.  The impact of the collision sent the GMC Terrain across the eastbound lane of West Washington Street, where the vehicle crashed into the fence outside the Chattooga County Courthouse.

Police say that Roberts ran a red light at the intersection which caused the accident.  The airbags in the Honda Civic were deployed due to the impact.

Roberts was taken to the Chattooga County Emergency Department due to neck pain.  Fulton and the passengers inside her vehicle, including her husband and three minor children, all had visible signs of injuries but refused transport to the Emergency Department, telling officers they would seek medical attention later.
