AAA is forecasting a monumental surge in travel this Independence Day holiday period, with a projected 72.2 million Americans embarking on domestic adventures between Saturday, June 28th, and Sunday, July 6th. This represents a significant 2.4% increase, adding 1.7 million more travelers compared to last year, and eclipsing pre-pandemic levels by a staggering 7 million travelers compared to 2019.
AAA’s updated holiday travel forecast now encompasses two full weekends, reflecting the growing trend of extended vacations and staggered departure schedules. The Peach State is poised for a record-breaking travel surge of its own. Nearly 2.3 million Georgians are expected to travel by road, air, and rail – an increase of almost 68,000 (2.9%) compared to last year. “Independence Day is one of the most popular times for travel, with Americans eager to take advantage of summer vacation opportunities,” said Debbie Haas, Vice President of AAA Travel. “This year, we’re seeing strong demand for road trips, flights, and cruises, especially with the holiday falling on a Friday. This is allowing travelers to extend their getaways and make lasting memories with loved ones.” While travel plans are soaring, gas prices remain a variable to watch.
Recent geopolitical events have caused fluctuations in oil prices, potentially impacting gasoline costs. Last week’s rise in oil prices, triggered by events involving Israel and Iran, has increased gasoline production costs. Although analysts believe this may be a temporary spike, the long-term impact on prices leading up to the holiday remains uncertain. Currently, Georgia drivers are enjoying an average gas price of around $2.95 per gallon, a welcome relief compared to last year’s holiday average of $3.32 per gallon.
