The Georgia Department of Education is launching a Student Bill of Rights to define students’ essential rights to a quality education in public schools. This initiative is timely as it aligns with the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026, emphasizing the need to focus on the core elements of education that serve students.
State School Superintendent Richard Woods states that every student in Georgia deserves an education that equips them for a successful future. The Student Bill of Rights is designed to reflect both the achievements of the state’s educational system and its future goals. It aims to create a safe and supportive environment for students while promoting excellent teaching and tailored educational experiences.
The priorities for the Bill were influenced by discussions with various stakeholders, including students, parents, teachers, and community members. Ann Kim, a member of the Student Advisory Council, emphasizes the importance of supportive teachers and educational opportunities.
The Bill of Rights specifies the following twelve rights for K-12 students: the right to a quality education; safe schools with small class sizes; time for recess and access to healthy meals; well-trained educators; a modernized education funding model; ample instructional time; recognition of the nation’s history; Georgia-specific academic standards; life preparation skills; valuing more than test scores; access to diverse educational opportunities; and the significance of a diploma that opens doors to future options.
