Yesterday, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced that he will appoint Dr. Dean Burke as the new Commissioner of the Department of Community Health, starting August 1.

This follows the announcement from current Commissioner Russel Carlson, who is moving to a private sector role. Governor Kemp expressed gratitude to Dr. Burke for his continued service and highlighted his strong background in medicine and healthcare policy as ideal for this important position.

Governor Kemp also thanked Russel Carlson for his contributions to the Department, noting his leadership during the launch of the Georgia Pathways to Coverage program. He wished Carlson and his family well for the future.

Currently, Dr. Burke is serving as Chief Medical Officer for the Department of Community Health. His previous experience includes serving in the Georgia Senate and holding various committee positions. He has also been actively involved in local governance, healthcare management, and medical practice, including 27 years specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Burke and his family live in Bainbridge.
