The Dade County Sheriff’s Office is reeling from the tragic death of K-9 Georgia, a young bloodhound who succumbed to heatstroke after being left in a patrol vehicle on a day when temperatures soared above 100 degrees. The incident has prompted immediate policy overhauls, the termination of the K-9 handler, and a criminal referral to the Dade County District Attorney’s Office.

An internal investigation launched by the department revealed critical equipment failures contributing to the tragedy. The patrol unit’s air conditioning system was found to be non-functional, and disturbingly, the vehicle’s heat alarm system, designed to alert handlers to dangerous temperatures, was also not working. K-9 Georgia was left unattended for what Sheriff Ray Cross described as “an unacceptable amount of time.”

In response to the devastating loss, Sheriff Cross announced stringent new protocols for the K-9 unit. “Going forward,” Sheriff Cross stated, “any K-9 vehicle we have will be taken out of service if ANY of the essential K-9 equipment isn’t in 100% working order.” The department also plans to “overhaul our K-9 handler policy,” with a strict directive that “K-9’s WILL NOT be left in vehicles for extended periods of time during summer.”

Effective immediately, K-9 Georgia’s handler is no longer an employee of the Dade County Sheriff’s Office, a decision made at the direct order of Sheriff Cross. Furthermore, the entire incident has been formally turned over to the Dade County District Attorney’s Office to determine if criminal prosecution is warranted in this case.

K-9 Georgia, a beloved addition to the force, was remembered by the department as sweet, eager, and full of promise. The young bloodhound had been generously donated by a local family, making her loss particularly poignant for the community and the department.

Sheriff Cross has pledged “100% transparency” regarding the incident, assuring the public that further details will be released once a decision is rendered by the Dade County District Attorney’s Office regarding potential prosecution.
