The spirit of friendship is alive and well in Summerville this week as the city celebrates its annual Friendship Week, a prelude to the much-anticipated Friendship Festival this Saturday, July 26. Proudly declared the “Friendship Capital of the World,” Summerville is inviting residents and visitors alike to embrace connections and explore diverse cultures.
Throughout the week, the community is engaging in various themed activities designed to strengthen bonds and create new ones. The festivities began on Sunday, July 20, with “Take A Walk With A Friend.” Monday, July 21, encouraged residents to “Buy A Friend A Cup Of Coffee or Send Them Something Special,” while Tuesday, July 22, was dedicated to recognizing those who serve with “Thank A Friend In Public Service.”
Mid-week sees a focus on communication, with Wednesday, July 23, designated as “Phone A Friend Day.” Thursday, July 24, promoted community generosity with “Pay It Forward Day,” and Friday, July 25, encourages everyone to “Meet A Friend For Lunch Day.” These daily prompts have encouraged residents to actively express appreciation and foster kindness within their social circles.
The week culminates in the grand Friendship Festival on Saturday, July 26, poised to transform Summerville Main Street into a vibrant global village. From 10 AM to 3 PM, Dowdy Park and the Summerville Depot will host a “Multi-Cultural Taste Around The World,” showcasing a rich tapestry of food and traditions from diverse cultures.
Attendees can look forward to a full day of entertainment and engagement, including lively kids’ activities, the much-anticipated train arrival, a marketplace featuring local artisans, captivating cultural demonstrations and performances, and a continuous stream of multi-cultural music and, of course, a wide array of international foods.
The festival serves as a physical manifestation of Summerville’s proud declaration as the “Friendship Capital of the World,” an identity the city wholeheartedly embraces through events like this.
Organizers encourage everyone to “Bring A Friend To Friendship Festival” on Saturday, making it the final activity of the special week. It’s an opportunity not only to enjoy a day of fun and discovery but also to reinforce the bonds that make Summerville a truly friendly and welcoming community.
