Runners looking to embrace the wild beauty and challenging terrain of Northwest Georgia’s trails can mark their calendars: The popular Twisted Ankle Trail Races are set to return to James H. “Sloppy” Floyd State Park on September 13, 2025. Featuring 5K, 10-mile, and half-marathon (13.1-mile) distances, early registration for this much-anticipated event is open now exclusively on Ultrasignup.
Whether you’re a seasoned trail veteran eyeing an excellent ramp-up to the fall race season or a curious newcomer eager to “get a taste of the trail” (*which organizers playfully warn can be habit-forming), the Twisted Ankle Trail Races offer something for every skill level. The 5K provides an accessible 3.1-mile (ish) introduction to running in the woods, while the 10-mile and 13.1-mile routes offer a tougher test of grit and endurance, culminating in a significant climb.
Participants can expect a diverse and engaging course through Sloppy Floyd State Park. All distances will feature a mix of wide trails and sections of single track, including a scenic trip up to the historic Marble Mine. The longer 10-mile and half-marathon events will truly “hit the heart and soul” of the Twisted Ankle Race as runners ascend Becky’s Bluff for a brief, memorable stretch on the renowned Pinhoti Trail – complete with the authentic challenge of rocks and roots.
James H. “Sloppy” Floyd State Park, nestled in the picturesque foothills of Northwest Georgia, provides a stunning backdrop for the races. The 561-acre park boasts two lakes totaling 51 acres, offering more than just exhilarating trails. Visitors can also enjoy 25 tent/trailer/RV sites, four cabins, and four backcountry sites, along with opportunities for fishing, kayak and paddleboat rentals, and a variety of monthly activities, making it an ideal destination for a race-day getaway or a weekend adventure.
Beyond the personal challenge and natural beauty, the Twisted Ankle Trail Races offer a unique opportunity to contribute to a vital cause. ALL PROCEEDS FROM THE TWISTED ANKLE RACE GO DIRECTLY TO THE FRIENDS OF THE PARK, supporting critical park maintenance, improvements, and programs. “Come support your State Park!” encourages race organizers, highlighting the community-focused aspect of the event.
Interested runners are encouraged to visit Ultrasignup HERE, to secure their spot. For additional details, updates, and community engagement, check out the Twisted Ankle Trail Races on Facebook.
