A Woodstock man died early Thursday morning in a violent crash on I-75 that followed a police pursuit and closed both directions of the interstate for nearly three hours. The victim has been identified as 40-year-old Benjamin Alstoft.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the incident occurred near Red Top Mountain Road when a Land Rover SUV, driven by Alstoft, was traveling northbound and actively fleeing from Cobb County Police.

A Cobb County officer performed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver on the vehicle. The maneuver caused the SUV to lose control, traveling through the median and striking the cable barrier separating the north and southbound lanes.

The Land Rover then began to overturn, crossing over the cable barrier and into the southbound lanes of I-75. Alstoft was ejected from the vehicle during the rollover and died at the scene.

The crash investigation is ongoing and is being handled by the Georgia State Patrol. Authorities have not yet released details regarding the initial reason for the Cobb County Police pursuit.
