The National Weather Service (NWS) in Peachtree City, Georgia, has once again issued a Heat Advisory for Chattooga County and all of Northwest Georgia, warning residents of dangerously high heat index values that could reach up to 108 degrees. The advisory remains in effect until 8 PM EDT this evening.

The Heat Advisory, which also encompasses large portions of central, east central, north central, northeast, and west central Georgia, highlights the ongoing threat of heat-related illnesses. Officials are urging residents to take immediate precautions as hot temperatures and high humidity continue to create hazardous conditions.

“Hot and humid conditions will continue in Northwest Georgia today,” stated the NWS advisory. “An Extreme Heat Warning and Heat Advisory remain in place through 8 PM. Peak heat indices in the 103 to 112 degree range are expected.”

To mitigate the risks of heat exhaustion and heatstroke, the NWS recommends the following precautionary and preparedness actions:

  • Drink plenty of fluids: Stay hydrated throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Stay in an air-conditioned room: Seek cooled indoor environments whenever possible.
  • Stay out of the sun: Limit outdoor activities, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Check up on relatives and neighbors: Ensure vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing conditions, are safe and have access to cool environments.

Today’s forecast for Chattooga County and surrounding areas includes a high near 96 degrees, with heat index values peaking around 103. A 20 percent chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms is expected after 2 PM. Some of these storms could produce hazardous wind gusts in the 40 to 50 mph range. Tonight, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 10 PM, with a partly cloudy sky and a low around 74 degrees.

Looking ahead, hot and humid weather will persist through Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday’s forecast includes a high near 92, with heat index values reaching up to 99 degrees. The chance of showers and thunderstorms increases significantly to 80 percent, particularly after 1 PM, with potential for new rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, and higher in thunderstorms. Thursday will see a high near 91 degrees with an 80 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms throughout the day.

Relief from the oppressive heat is anticipated by the weekend. Cooler temperatures are expected, with highs returning to the 80s and overnight lows dropping back into the 60s for Saturday and Sunday, offering a welcome reprieve for the region.
