A routine traffic stop on Talifero Springs Road on August 2, 2025, escalated into a drug arrest when a passenger was found to be in possession of methamphetamine and drug-related objects.

According to an incident report filed by the Chattooga County Sheriff’s office, a deputy  observed a grey Nissan Xtera traveling south on Talifero Springs Road at approximately 2:49 PM, failing to maintain its lane by driving on both sides of the roadway.

The deputy initiated a stop, bringing the vehicle to a halt near Sling Alley Road. He approached the vehicle and identified the driver as Justin Pettyjohn and the passenger as Christopher Allen Tallent, 47. The deputy noted that both occupants appeared nervous, showing rapid chest movements.

Upon running Pettyjohn’s information through dispatch, it was revealed he was on felony probation. The deputy asked Pettyjohn to exit the vehicle, and after a pat down, Pettyjohn confirmed he was on probation for a previous drug arrest. When asked for consent to search the vehicle due to suspicion of drugs, Pettyjohn reportedly granted permission.

The deputy then turned his attention to the passenger, Christopher Tallent. After explaining the impending vehicle search, Tallent was asked to exit. During a pat-down for weapons, the deputy asked Tallent for consent to search his pockets, to which Tallent agreed. In Tallent’s left pocket, the deputy located an unmarked black plastic container holding a plastic bag containing suspected methamphetamine. Tallent was immediately placed into handcuffs and detained in the patrol unit.

Another deputy arrived on the scene to assist with the vehicle search. During the search, deputies discovered further contraband. A soda can in the center cupholder, which rattled when moved, was cut open to reveal a glass smoking device and another small clear plastic bag containing suspected methamphetamine. A subsequent search under the plastic cover of the gear shifter uncovered another glass smoking device, also containing suspected methamphetamine.

After securing all drug-related items, Tallent reportedly agreed to speak with deputies and, after a brief conversation, claimed possession of all the drugs and drug-related items found.

Justin Pettyjohn, the driver, was released from the scene after being issued a citation for no insurance and warnings for an expired license and an expired tag. He was able to arrange for a vehicle tow dolly from a nearby relative’s home to remove the vehicle.

Christopher Allen Tallent was transported to the Chattooga County Jail and was formally charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug-related objects.
