The Emergency Management Preparedness Grant (EMPG) has been awarded to the Chattooga County Emergency Management Agency, providing a critical source of annual funding. The amount allocated to each county is based on its size and population, enabling the agencies to enhance their public safety response capabilities by funding essential equipment, training, and supplies.

To determine priority areas for funding, a thorough needs assessment is conducted in coordination with various departments and agencies. Purchases must align with the approved categories for EMPG funding, and the agencies aim to maximize the grant’s impact by addressing the most pressing gaps in emergency response.

Last year, the grant enabled the purchase of ham radios for critical infrastructure locations throughout the county, inspired by lessons learned from Hurricane Helene. These radios maintained vital communication capabilities during the disaster, highlighting their importance in emergency situations.

In other years, the EMPG funding in Chattooga County has supported specialized training for personnel, including courses in heavy equipment extrication, search and rescue management, and foot search operations. These courses are essential for maintaining a capable and prepared response force.

The grant has also been used to purchase mobile and portable radios for the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). These volunteers play a vital role in supporting operations during emergencies, and reliable communication tools are essential for their effectiveness and safety.

The Summerville Fire Department expressed its gratitude for the EMPG funding, which allowed the purchase of Stihl 311 chainsaws and other equipment distributed to city and Chattooga County fire departments. These resources will enable them to better serve their community.

Pamela Vaughn, who applied for and was awarded the EMA grant, was commended for her hard work and dedication to the county. The EMPG funding empowers emergency response agencies to support their volunteers and strengthen the overall safety and resilience of their communities.
