Human remains were discovered Thursday morning near Martha Berry Boulevard at Little Dry Creek in Rome, prompting a joint investigation by the Rome Police Department and the Floyd County Coroner’s Office.

The grim find was made by Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) inspectors conducting a routine bridge inspection in the vicinity of the old Car Mart. According to a news release, the inspectors observed what appeared to be human remains near the waterway.

Upon confirmation of the discovery, the scene was immediately secured by law enforcement. Officers with the Criminal Investigations Division of the Rome Police Department are now working closely with the coroner’s office to properly recover and identify the remains.

While the identity of the individual has not yet been confirmed, preliminary observations suggest the remains are those of an adult female.

Authorities stated that no further details are available at this time, pending the completion of identification procedures and the ongoing investigative process.

The news release also assured the public that there is no indication of any immediate threat to the community related to this discovery.

The investigation remains active, and officials anticipate releasing additional information as it becomes available and new details are confirmed.
