Chattooga High School’s Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) chapter recently hosted a powerful meeting, bringing the critical issue of mental health to the forefront for its members. Students heard from Jim and Bonnie Moore, who shared their personal story and highlighted the vital work of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), inspiring the group to participate in the upcoming NAMIWalks event on September 20th.
NAMI, the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization, is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals living with serious mental illness and their families. The statistics underscore the urgency of their mission: mental illness impacts one in five American families, and in Georgia alone, over 500,000 of the state’s nearly 8.2 million residents grapple with a severe mental illness.
During the recent HOSA meeting, the Moores offered a poignant and personal perspective on mental health. Their narrative, delivered with candor, provided students with a deeper understanding of the challenges and triumphs associated with mental illness. They also introduced NAMIWalks, presenting it as a key opportunity for community engagement and support.
The presentation clearly resonated with the Chattooga HOSA students, who expressed enthusiasm about lending their support. “Our members had the opportunity to listen to Jim and Bonnie Moore speak about mental health, their story, and also about NAMI Walks,” a recent post from CHS HOSA noted. “Chattooga High School HOSA students are excited to help at the walk on September 20th!”
NAMIWalks serves as NAMI’s signature fundraising and awareness initiative, a series of community walks held nationwide. These events are crucial for generating funds that directly support NAMI’s free local programs and services, which aim to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental illness and foster a supportive environment where no one feels isolated in their struggles. Participants are encouraged to form teams, share their own stories, and enjoy a day filled with connection, fun, and activities, all while raising vital funds for mental health initiatives.
By engaging with NAMI and participating in NAMIWalks, Chattooga HOSA students are not only raising awareness but also actively contributing to a future where mental health is openly discussed, understood, and supported within their community and beyond.
