A Trion woman was hospitalized last week after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross Highway 27 near the intersection of Underwood Road, an incident where investigators noted faint crosswalk markings at the scene.
Nan Greeson, 66, was crossing the highway from west to east on the south side of the intersection when she was hit by a white 2002 Chevrolet C15 truck. The vehicle was driven by Eric Ryan Talley, 33, of LaFayette.
According to the Georgia State Patrol’s report, Talley told authorities he was stopped on Underwood Road, preparing to make a left-hand turn onto Highway 27. He stated that after receiving a green light, he proceeded with the turn and did not see Greeson crossing the inside southbound lane. He struck her with the left front of his vehicle, coming to a stop approximately one to two feet past the point of impact. Greeson told authorities she had been attempting to reach the east shoulder of the road to continue walking home.
The specifics of the incident are complicated by differing witness accounts. Brenda McPhail of Summerville, a passenger in a northbound vehicle, stated she saw Greeson walking in what she believed to be the marked crosswalk when she was struck. However, another witness, Ty Claypool, who was facing southbound, told investigators he did not believe Greeson was within the crosswalk and was instead located where Talley described.
Adding to the unclear circumstances, the Georgia State Patrol’s investigation noted that the crosswalk markings at the intersection were faint due to recent road resurfacing. A visual inspection of the traffic signal also revealed that the pedestrian crossing signal displayed a red stop hand – indicating ‘Do Not Walk’ – at the time of the incident.
State Trooper Chris Harris confirmed that the “Walk” and “Do Not Walk” indicators were operational, and the crossing signal facing Greeson would have indicated not to cross when she entered the roadway.
Greeson was transported by ambulance to Atrium Floyd Medical Center for treatment following the collision.
The incident remains under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol.
