As thousands of Georgians prepare to hit the roads this Labor Day weekend to celebrate the unofficial end of summer, the Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) is issuing a stern warning to prioritize safety. Law enforcement agencies across the state, including the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE) Officers, will deploy high-visibility patrols with a zero-tolerance approach to unsafe driving.

The 78-hour holiday travel period officially begins Friday, August 29, at 6:00 p.m., and runs through Monday, September 1, at 11:59 p.m. During this critical time, officers will be focusing on key violations proven to contribute to serious crashes, including impaired driving, speeding, seatbelt infractions, and distracted or otherwise unsafe driving on both interstates and secondary roads.

“The Labor Day weekend marks the last holiday before summer’s official end. The Georgia Department of Public Safety urges motorists to prioritize safety by buckling up, obeying speed limits, avoiding distractions, and designating a sober driver if consuming alcohol,” said Colonel William W. Hitchens, III, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

The warning comes as officials reflect on the tragic statistics from a recent Labor Day holiday. During the 2024 Labor Day holiday travel period, GSP Troopers investigated more than 550 crashes, which resulted in nine fatal crashes, 13 fatalities, and over 200 injuries. Including local law enforcement agencies, the statewide toll reached 16 fatal crashes and 20 fatalities. Troopers also made over 480 arrests for driving under the influence (DUI) during that period.

“We want everyone to enjoy their holiday celebrations this weekend, but safe driving should be your top priority on the way to your destination,” Colonel Hitchens added. “If you need emergency assistance while traveling in Georgia, please don’t hesitate to call 911 or dial *GSP on your cell phone.”

Local law enforcement will also be out in full force. In Chattooga County, the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, the Summerville Police Department, and Trion Police have all announced their commitment to enhanced patrols, specifically looking for impaired drivers to ensure the safety of their communities throughout the holiday weekend.
