September marks Library Card Sign-up Month, and the Sara Hightower Regional Library System (SHRLS) is joining libraries across Georgia and the nation in encouraging residents to discover the extensive, free benefits that come with a library card. Far beyond traditional book lending, a library card offers a wealth of educational, entertainment, and career-advancing resources for all ages.

With a library card, patrons gain access to an expansive collection of physical books, eBooks, and audiobooks. But the benefits extend much further, including free classes, valuable career development tools, essential homework assistance, and even streaming shows and movies. Georgia’s public libraries actively connect communities to vital information, inspiration, and each other.

“With a library card, Georgians can explore new ways to learn, create, and connect,” said Julie Walker, state librarian and vice chancellor for Libraries and Archives. “Whether you want to explore a new hobby, find your next great read, learn a new job skill, or help your child succeed in school, it all starts with your public library card. There is something for everyone at the library, no matter where you live in Georgia, and no matter your age or goal.”

Georgia stands out as one of the few states to provide a statewide library card, free of charge to all residents and participating libraries. The PINES network, encompassing 300 public libraries across Georgia, facilitates the transfer of more than 3.64 million books and materials annually, ensuring patrons can access resources from anywhere in the state. Parents and caregivers can also easily explore books through the updated, user-friendly PINES Kids catalog.

Beyond the vast physical collection, Georgia’s public libraries offer specialized digital resources such as eRead Kids for students from Pre-K to 4th grade, and GALILEO, a virtual library providing historical documents, research materials, language courses, and GED test preparation. Libraries also provide essential technology, including free high-speed Wi-Fi, laptops for checkout, and even 3D printers. Additionally, the Georgia Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled offers materials in audio and braille formats for those whose physical abilities require specialized formats.

Locally, the Sara Hightower Regional Library System will host special Library Card Sign-up activities throughout September, including fall festivals at its various branch locations. Upcoming events include:

Chattooga Library: Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 11 a.m.
Trion Library: Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 10 a.m.
