A Summerville man was arrested Sunday morning on misdemeanor DUI-Drugs charges following an incident at a local McDonald’s restaurant where he was reportedly intoxicated and refusing to leave.

Marcus Broom, 47, was taken into custody on September 7, 2025, after Chattooga County Deputies responded to reports of a possibly impaired individual at the fast-food establishment.

According to the incident report, deputies were dispatched to the McDonald’s Restaurant in Summerville at approximately 7:31 AM on Sunday. The call reported a male subject who was possibly intoxicated and refusing to vacate the premises.

Upon arrival, deputies observed Marcus Broom inside the restaurant with his head down and hands clenched. Colonel Wilks, who was on the scene, reported that Mr. Broom exhibited exaggerated reflexes and other indicators of possible impairment, noting he also put his head back and closed his eyes.

Deputies spoke with Broom outside the restaurant. When asked if there was anything illegal in his vehicle, Broom replied “No.” During a subsequent consent search of Broom’s vehicle, deputies spoke with the passenger, identified as Ms. Bodamer, who stated that Broom had driven them to the restaurant about ten minutes prior, adding that she did not know him well. This statement was crucial in establishing that Broom was operating a vehicle.

Deputies then asked Broom if he had any medical issues or was diabetic, to which Broom responded negatively. Broom consented to a field sobriety test. However, during attempts to administer the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) examination, deputies noted that Broom had a significant difficulty understanding instructions, despite clear and strong verbal explanations. Broom reportedly kept placing his head down, looking around, clenching his fists, and appeared to be in an “excited state,” unable to comprehend basic directions.

Based on his experience and knowledge in detecting impairment, Officer Villagomez suspected Broom was under the influence of possibly Central Nervous System Stimulants. Marcus Broom was subsequently placed under arrest for DUI-Drugs.

He was read the Implied Consent Notice for suspects 21 or over, to which he agreed. Broom was then transported to E.M.S. Station 12 for a blood draw, conducted by Michael Bibb, before being taken to the Chattooga County Jail.

The entire incident was captured on a deputy’s body-worn camera. Broom faces one misdemeanor charge of DUI-Drugs.
