Two individuals were pronounced dead following a devastating structure fire that erupted early Sunday morning in Chattooga County, prompting an immediate investigation by state and local authorities.
The Chattooga County Coroner’s office was notified of the incident by Chattooga County 911 at 4:09 AM regarding a fire in the 1200 Block of Ridgeway Drive reported to have multiple fatalities.
Chattooga County Coroner Jeremy McElhaney responded to the scene, where he officially pronounced two individuals deceased. The identities of the victims are currently being withheld pending positive identification.
The investigation into the cause and origin of the blaze is in its critical early stages and is being led by the Georgia State Fire Marshal’s Office.
“We are grateful for the swift response of all agencies involved in this tragic incident,” Coroner McElhaney stated, adding that the investigation will be thorough.
The Coroner’s office confirmed that both deceased individuals will be transported to the Medical Examiner’s office in Atlanta for further examination and positive identification. Authorities have not yet released any details regarding the structure or the circumstances surrounding the fire.
Multiple agencies mobilized immediately following the initial 911 call, ensuring a rapid response to contain the fire and secure the scene. Responding departments included the Trion Fire Department, Summerville Fire Department, Hayes Correctional Fire Department, Atrium-Floyd EMS, the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Department, and the Georgia State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Authorities urge the public to respect the privacy of the affected residents as the investigation continues. Officials with the Georgia Fire Marshal’s Office have indicated that more information will be released to the public once it becomes available and the investigation progresses past these initial stages.
