A Cherokee County, Alabama jury has convicted a Guntersville man on multiple felony charges after a three-day trial in an attempted sex trafficking case involving a minor.

Maekele Tekle, 32, was found guilty Wednesday on charges of attempted human trafficking in the first degree, traveling to meet a child for a sex act, and engaging in prostitution with a minor. The jury of seven women and five men deliberated before delivering the verdict in Circuit Judge Jeremy Taylor’s courtroom.

According to testimony presented by prosecutors from the Cherokee County District Attorney’s Office, the case stemmed from an undercover operation in September 2023. Tekle allegedly responded to an online advertisement for sex and engaged in text message exchanges with what he believed was a 15-year-old girl. Despite being informed of the minor’s age, prosecutors said Tekle agreed to pay $50 for sex and arranged a meeting at the Leesburg Lodge.

When Tekle arrived at the hotel, he was instead met by law enforcement officers, who had been monitoring the operation.

Sentencing is expected to take place at a later date. Tekle could face significant prison time under Alabama law, which imposes stringent penalties for human trafficking and crimes against minors.

The case highlights continued efforts by authorities to combat online child exploitation and sex trafficking through proactive undercover operations.
