Northwest Georgia residents are waking up this morning to widespread low-hanging clouds, fog, and mist, with visibility hampered by conditions settling generally at 500 feet or lower. However, meteorologists predict a rapid transition starting late this morning, ushering in a prolonged period of dry, mild, and pleasant weather across the region.

The current misty conditions are expected to dissipate quickly as daytime heating and atmospheric mixing begin to break up the low clouds.

High Pressure Dominates Outlook

The shift marks the final departure of the mid-to-upper-level low that delivered rain and storms yesterday. As that system moves east, a robust mid-to-upper-level ridge and accompanying surface high pressure are nudging in from the west, locking in dry conditions and providing ample sunshine through much of the upcoming week.

High temperatures today are forecasted to be in the 60s across Northwest Georgia, climbing into the lower 70s for parts of Central Georgia. With clear skies tonight, temperatures will drop significantly, falling into the upper 30s to mid-40s.

Tuesday promises even warmer conditions. With continued dry weather and abundant sunshine, highs will reach the mid-60s to mid-70s, several degrees warmer than today.

Extended Period of Above-Normal Warmth

The expansive upper-level ridging settling over the area from the northern Gulf is predicted to hold strong for the majority of the working week, reinforcing a dry and gradually warming airmass across the state.

“Overall, very pleasant, dry, and mild conditions are expected across Northwest Georgia through the remainder of the upcoming week,” stated a representative from the local weather advisory office. Temperatures will consistently run a bit warmer than normal during this period.

From Wednesday through Saturday, daily high temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid-70s. Overnight lows will gradually climb as the airmass warms, moving from the low to mid-40s on Wednesday night up to the mid-to-upper 40s on Thursday and Friday, and potentially hitting the low to mid-50s by the weekend.

Weekend Forecast: Tracking Potential Rainfall

The extended stretch of stable weather is expected to be challenged late in the week, though confidence remains low regarding the exact timing and severity of any change.

Forecasters are monitoring a stout shortwave that is expected to drop across the Midwest and Eastern US late Friday into Saturday. This system is anticipated to squash the dominant ridge and allow broad troughing to set up over the Eastern US for the remainder of the weekend.

The initial shortwave and associated frontal boundary may bring North and Central Georgia’s next chance for rainfall late Friday into Saturday, with a possibility of a second round on Sunday. Temperatures are expected to cool slightly on Sunday following the system’s passage.

Residents are advised to enjoy the stretch of mild, sunny weather before any potential return of measurable rainfall this weekend.
