Residents in Chattooga County and much of Northwest Georgia are advised to brace for a series of hazardous weather conditions, starting with dense fog this morning and transitioning into two consecutive nights of freezing temperatures, including the season’s first widespread hard freeze.
Dense Fog Advisory Until 9 AM EST
An immediate Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for Chattooga County and most of Northwest Georgia until 9 AM EST this morning. Visibilities are expected to drop below one mile, creating treacherous driving conditions.
Motorists are urged to slow down significantly, use their headlights (low beams are often best in fog), and maintain ample space between their vehicle and others. Leaving plenty of distance ahead is crucial for safe travel.
First Freeze Warning: Sunday Night into Monday Morning
Following the morning fog, temperatures will plummet. A Freeze Warning has been issued for Chattooga County and all of Northwest Georgia from 1 AM to 10 AM EST Monday. Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 28 degrees Fahrenheit are expected across the warning area, with even lower temperatures possible in higher elevations.
Residents should take steps Sunday evening to protect sensitive outdoor vegetation by covering plants or bringing them indoors. Additionally, outdoor pipes should be prepared to prevent freezing – consider wrapping them, allowing them to drip slowly, or draining them completely.
Widespread Hard Freeze Watch: Monday Night into Tuesday Morning
Even colder air is on its way, bringing the first widespread hard freeze of the season. A Freeze Watch is in effect for all of Northwest Georgia from Monday evening through Tuesday morning. During this period, sub-freezing temperatures are expected to drop significantly, ranging from 20 to 27 degrees Fahrenheit, making for a truly hard freeze.
The same precautions for the initial freeze apply, but with increased urgency due to the lower temperatures. Exposed pipes are at higher risk of freezing and bursting, so ensure they are wrapped, drained, or dripping. Sensitive plants brought inside for the first freeze should remain protected.
Arctic Air Mass Driving the Cold
A potent cold front is rapidly pushing through the region today, causing a sharp drop in temperatures. Highs today may occur relatively early in the day as the colder air moves in.
This cold front is being reinforced by a massive influx of Arctic air descending from Canada. A significant “Arctic blast” is expected to settle over the deep south by Monday night and Tuesday, bringing with it an Arctic high-pressure system that will drive temperatures far below seasonal averages.
Authorities advise everyone to stay informed about changing weather conditions and take all necessary precautions to ensure safety for themselves, their property, and their pets.
