Three hikers from Murray County required an overnight rescue operation after becoming disoriented and lost in the remote Narrows area of Chattooga County on Saturday. The two males and one female were safely located and extracted by emergency crews shortly before 1 AM on Sunday morning.
The incident unfolded on Saturday when the trio ventured into The Narrows, a notoriously rugged and remote section of Chattooga County that stretches between the Mountain View Community and the West Armuchee Valley. As dusk gave way to darkness, the hikers realized they had lost their way and were unable to navigate out of the challenging terrain.
Fortunately, the hikers were able to contact Chattooga 911, alerting authorities to their predicament. A multi-agency response was quickly launched, mobilizing emergency workers from the Trion Fire Department and the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office.
Crews navigated the difficult and remote landscape under the cover of darkness, eventually locating the trio. All three hikers were reported to be unharmed, though undoubtedly relieved to be found. They were then escorted out of the wilderness, with the successful rescue concluding shortly before 1 AM on Sunday morning.
The incident serves as a reminder of the inherent dangers of hiking in remote areas, particularly as days shorten and temperatures drop. Authorities often advise hikers to be prepared for sudden changes in weather, carry appropriate navigation tools, and inform others of their planned routes and estimated return times.
