Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has appointed Chris Harper as the new Director of the Wildlife Resources Division (WRD), effective December 1, 2025. Harper has been with the WRD since 1999, serving most recently as Assistant Chief of Fisheries Management.

His extensive career includes roles as a fisheries biologist, statewide fish hatchery coordinator, and fisheries technician, where he has developed significant expertise in resource management, facility operations, and staff development. He aims to enhance stewardship of Georgia’s natural resources and expand outdoor opportunities. Harper holds a master’s degree in wildlife and fisheries biology from Clemson University and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Armstrong State University. He enjoys fishing, hiking, and woodworking, and resides in Watkinsville with his family. Harper expressed his honor at the appointment and his commitment to leading the WRD in conserving wildlife and enhancing outdoor experiences. He will oversee the division responsible for managing and promoting fishing, hunting, and wildlife resources through education and research, which includes four sections: Game Management, Fisheries Management, Wildlife Conservation, and Communication, Education and Outreach.

DNR Commissioner Walter Rabon highlighted Harper’s extensive experience and dedication to conservation as key qualifications for the role. Harper succeeds Ted Will, who is retiring after over 25 years with the Department. The DNR’s mission encompasses the sustainability and conservation of Georgia’s natural, historic, and cultural resources while balancing commercial and industrial developments with environmental practices.
