The Georgia Department of Transportation has released its official Thanksgiving holiday travel forecast and announced plans to suspend interstate and major state route lane closures to help ease congestion for millions of travelers hitting the road next week.
The suspension of construction-related lane closures will begin at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, November 26, and continue through 10 p.m. on Sunday, November 30. GDOT says the pause is designed to create a smoother, safer, and less stressful travel experience during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
According to the department, the five-day lane-closure suspension will apply to Georgia interstates, major state routes, and highways near large shopping areas where holiday traffic is typically heaviest.
Travelers Should Still Use Caution
Although lane closures will be lifted, GDOT reminds drivers that:
-
Construction crews may still be working near roadways, and some long-term lane closures may remain in place for safety.
-
Emergency and incident-related closures can occur at any time.
-
Drivers should stay alert, obey signage, and exercise extra caution, especially in or near work zones.
GDOT officials encourage the public to monitor conditions closely, noting that heavy traffic, weather, and major events can all affect travel time.
Check Road Conditions Before You Go
GDOT recommends travelers check the latest highway conditions through the 511GA app or by visiting the Georgia DOT website for real-time updates on delays, incidents, and traffic patterns.
As millions of people prepare to hit the road for family gatherings, shopping trips, and holiday events, GDOT is urging motorists to plan ahead, drive carefully, and prioritize safety.
The agency also extended well wishes to all Georgians traveling this holiday season, saying it hopes everyone enjoys a safe and pleasant Thanksgiving.
