The Chattooga County Malt Beverage Board approved the first ever beer and wine license for a county restaurant this week. The application was approved for El Peublito in Summerville for a beer and wine pouring license.
The move was made possible the passing of an ordinance last August by Commissioner Jason Winters. At the time Commissioner Winters said that the move to allow restaurants in the county to apply for a beer and wine license was to "level the playing field" between restaurants located in the City of Summerville – which already had a pouring license ordinance – and those in the county.
Chattooga County’s beer and wine ordinance for restaurants will still allow for the practice of "brown bagging." Winters said that it is unusual for a county or municipality to include "brown bagging" when they also have a pouring license.
