The City of Summerville is accepting applications for a Street Maintenance Worker, a position focused on helping construct, maintain, and repair city streets, rights-of-way, bridges, ditches, and drainage systems.
Major duties include installing drainage pipe, locating underground utilities, patching streets, maintaining driveways, and operating hand and power tools. The position also assists with vehicle and equipment upkeep—checking fluid levels, changing oil, inspecting tires and belts—and helps with street sign repair, traffic control using barricades and flags, ditch and drainage cleanup, mowing rights-of-way, trimming trees and bushes, collecting yard waste, and installing banners and holiday decorations.
The job is physically demanding and performed mostly outdoors, requiring bending, stooping, lifting light and heavy objects, climbing ladders, and using tools requiring dexterity. Workers may be exposed to noise, dust, moving machinery, and inclement weather, and will use protective gear such as masks, goggles, and gloves.
Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent experience, along with enough related experience to understand the basic duties—typically from an apprenticeship, internship, or one to two years in a similar role. Applicants must also have, or be able to obtain, a valid Georgia driver’s license appropriate for the equipment operated.
