Energy assistance is available now in Chattooga County through the federally funded Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), with applications currently open for priority households and wider sign-ups set to begin right after New Year’s.
Officials say the priority phase has been open since December 1 for homebound seniors age 65 and older and for medically homebound individuals. For all other eligible residents, the general application period begins Thursday, January 2, 2026—the first workday of the new year.
LIHEAP is administered locally through North Georgia Community Action (NGCA) in partnership with the Georgia Division of Family & Children Services (DFCS). The program provides direct payments to energy suppliers to help cover winter heating costs, and may also assist in certain crisis situations. Separate services such as weatherization and energy-related home repairs may be available through other programs.
Because funding is limited and typically handled on a first-come, first-served basis, residents are encouraged to prepare early by gathering key documents such as photo ID, proof of income, and current utility bills before scheduling an appointment.
